Maltese |
MalteseThe origin of the Maltese is shrouded in mystery. Legends say they may have developed from the small dogs of Melita, an ancient town in Sicily. Or they may have began on the island of Malta or in ancient Egypt. Some believe the Maltese to be a spaniel type dog, while others say it is a terrier type. Whatever their origin, the Maltese has been around a very long time and is a very popular toy breed all around the world, especially in the United States, Canada, Italy, Japan and England. The Maltese is a sturdy little toy breed. Weighing only a mere 5 ounces when born they range from 4 to 6 pounds when grown. They have a single coat that is silky and solid white, never curly or wooly in texture. The affectionate and loving Maltese forms strong bonds and is easily trained due to its intelligence and intuitiveness. Although gentle in manner, it is a lively and playfull toy breed that seemingly knows no fear. |
